Introducing Bernadette Pleasant of The Art of Nia I met Bernadette at a feminine feast dinner. At an S Factor retreat. The first thing she said to me was, “Can I share what I saw in you?” We’d done an observation activity earlier in the day that illustrated how much one woman can witness in another when she is fully present and trusts her intuition. Bernadette noticed my arms folded across my chest and an intensity about me that told her I had a serious side, particularly about doing the exercise. And then she saw my sparking blue eyes, hint of a smile and wavy hair which meant I had a playful side too. I was amazed that Bernadette had been able to tune in to such key aspects of my essential self from two minutes of focused attention. In my first job out of college one of the managers had called me a “thorough thinker,” a compliment I’d always been extremely proud of. And at that retreat, I came home to a playful core that friends and family knew well but that I’d kept at arms length from the academic world. We played together at another retreat. And deepened [...]

My husband hasn’t had as many lap dances as you might think. He’s had some. And frequently witnesses spontaneous mini-dances around the house when music makes me move. Pondering a just-for-him, dressed-to-seduce pole/lap dance as a 24th anniversary gift (it’s today), I was stumped for a song. How is that possible, you ask? It’s not, if I pick music I adore. Any one of the 25 on my sensual & passionate siren song list will make me happy. And he’d enjoy it too. But that would be a present (something I want him to have) rather than a gift (something he wants to receive). The dilemma? He doesn’t enjoy many of my siren songs. Instead of surprising him with a song I thought he might like, I asked him what he’d choose. I figured it would be sultry jazz like Norah Jones, Melody Gardot. Maybe Harry Connick. I was wrong. . Hubby’s Picks 1. Hot for Teacher by Van Halen. Really!?! We don’t even own this one!?! 2. I Touch Myself by the Divinyls. This makes more sense. Years ago he suggested it as a song for me for class. (I prefer P!nk’s cover.) I wanted more ideas. I threw [...]

Introducing Joy de Vivre Joy is my newest siren sister and founder of la Vie Sirene, a brand new digital magazine dedicated to living the siren life. I’m getting to know her as a contributor to the magazine. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she embodies her name brilliantly! The magazine’s inaugural June issue is all about Mermaids! Today’s article is Events During the Mermaid Season. Coney Island’s mermaid parade is infamous; who knew Sacramento has one too! Lots of other opportunities for frolicsome fun all summer long. To see what’s coming the rest of June in the magazine peek at the table of contents. I’m looking forward to What Mermaiding Means to Me on 6/7. Intrigued by Channeling Your Inner Mermaid on 6/22. And 6/20 features an interview with me about the Siren Song. . Mermaid Playlist . 1. What makes this playlist a compilation of Songs for the Siren to you? I actually have a playlist for every type of siren archetype I enjoy: mermaid, naiad, genie, gypsy, flapper, faerie, geisha, French showgirl, burlesque, goddess, Polynesian, 1940′s pin-up, Flamenco, shaman… the list goes on and on. All told, there are hundred of songs and dozens of hours of music. In [...]

Last week’s Songs for the Siren featured 12 sexy fantasy pole dance songs chosen to appeal to a wide range of women. This week’s are my personal favorites for feeling super sexy and sensual or passionate, wild and free. I believe all women need their own list of siren songs. For dancing, listening and transforming. While some songs inspire many, no song works for all women. We’re all unique. Most women will discover several songs that are like catnip for her tiger. They may not make sense to anyone else but her (e.g. my Donny Osmond one falls into that category). These 25 songs work over and over again for me, no matter how often I dance to them. Each is a go-to pole dance song for a specific mood or need. I’ve shared some before. Most aren’t right all the time. When I’m in the mood oh baby, baby! And if I’m careful to give them a rest periodically so I don’t wear them out, ALL conjure magic some of the time. Most will appeal to at least some of you. All are sexy to me. Twelve are sensual. The other thirteen are passionate. . 12 Sensual Songs Each of these songs make me [...]

Today’s Songs for the Siren features the 12 sexiest pole dance songs I know to live out the pole dance fantasy. I’ve warmed up to them and played on the pole to them. And witnessed many women get their groove on to these songs. Try them all. Listen on spotify or itunes. You’re sure to find one for when you want to shed your inhibitions. By yourself. Or with a lover. They are explicit. Overtly sexual. Dirty. Hot. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. 1. I Wanna Fuck You by Snoop Dogg Feat. Akon Teacher’s choice my second Christmas pole dancing. Not something I would’ve picked for myself. I like it. My body adored it and she had two uninhibited pelvic bounce moments. 2. Bad Girlfriend by Theory of a Deadman I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song watching a beautiful pregnant classmate dance. Mercy, mercy me! 3. Lick by Joi S Factor forums introduced me to this one. Still lights my fire when it plays in class. Super slow. Hot lyrics: I lose all control …when you lick. My favorite part And even when you’re not around me The tinglin’ just won’t go away Don’t [...]

Smitten with the South Seas Eleven years ago, I became a South Sea Siren sitting on the tarmac at LAX on a Southwest flight bound for Oakland. Looking out the window at the Air Tahiti Nui plane, I sighed. My husband, Brian, asked what was wrong. I told him if someone made me an offer to board that plane and fly back to Moorea right then I’d do it. He thought I was crazy. We’d just spent eight hours on that plane coming home from a nine day visit in Moorea, Raiatea and Taha’a. He was right. I was smitten. Crazy in love. I’d never felt this way about a place before. Just like woman in love, I immersed myself in Tahiti through my senses with monoi oil, tiare soap, French bread, pineapple, poisson cru. And Rod Danny’s Hoara’i Ami du Ciel, a CD we bought at the Fa’a airport, became my summer soundtrack. Music, more than anything, transports me to a place and time. One of my favorite songs on the album was Molokai Sweet Home, a song about Hawai’i. . Falling for Hawai’i The following year we couldn’t afford a trip back to Tahiti so we visited Hawai’i [...]

For the May Pole Dance Blog Hop we’re answering questions we get asked when others hear we pole dance as well as some we have for each other. 1. How long have you been pole dancing? 7 years, 10 Months. I wrote about my first time for my 7th pole dance anniversary. 2. What’s your favorite song to pole dance to? Can’t. Choose. One. Song. That’s like asking me to eat only blueberries for the rest of my life. My favorite food when they show up at my local farmer’s market in mid May. I need variety. I have favorite songs for different moods, emotions, needs and desires. Here’s a list of ten go-to songs. Today I’d add: Dream On by Aerosmith to that list for sure. Get Big by Dorrough, Draw Your Swords by Angus & Julia Stone, Storm by Lifehouse, Adorn by Miguel. Artists including: Collide, Etta James, Lisa Marie Presley, Janet Jackson, The Weeknd and Christina Aguilera I Shall Be Free by Kid Beyond, my love-fire song. The song I chose to represent me on a CD when my long time class ended in January. 3. What’s your favorite pole dance move? Flying Half Pint (aka Reverse Stag) [...]

Introducing an Extraordinary San Francisco S Factor Teacher When my friend and classmate, IH, taught her first level one S Factor class, she invited me to attend. I enjoyed going back to basics and getting my dance on from walking and frisking only in week one. And revisiting the routine during week eight. Both were fun. Most of all I adored how her relaxing imagery and warm soothing voice made me feel like I’d immersed myself into a hot tub! If you’re looking for a fun, sexy, relaxing start to your Sunday morning consider trying IH’s next Sunday morning S Factor class on May 26. 1) What are three ways you discover new music? I primarily discover new music from the radio or tv, I love Shazam! I also appreciate all the songs that are posted by other S Factor teachers and on the S Factor Retreat Group Facebook pages. I also discover new music from attending as many classes as I can, and usually hear awesome new music played by my amazing and beautiful teachers, classmates and students at S. 2) How do you create your playlists? I start with a theme, usually inspired by my current mood. , [...]

Know your story. Take the PLUNGE. I adore how well this captures who she is. And what her business is about. My transition from academic educator to entrepreneurial one has been slower than I expected. And more challenging. Like many people I’m not good at sales. At least I told myself that. Tended to avoid it. When Kris offered a 4 week course called Sales + Soul at the end of 2012 I signed up. When I received the first module and saw the Mermaid Queen by Holli Alvarado on the dreaming BIG page, I knew I was right where I was supposed to be. Synchronicity continued. Within a few days of beginning the course my Call for Anthology Submissions was out in the world after months of planning. During the course I identified the core of my work as Sirens Secrets. Even now I see more magic. I’d used the mermaid queen image in a September 2012 post to illustrate insight 6: Respond to the Call of the Siren Song. Sends [...]

The Siren needs Songs She needs to dance. To surf waves. Water waves. Musical waves. Emotional waves. All kinds of waves. And make tracks in the sand. To find our songs. The ones that inspire us and suit our souls we need to hear them. And test drive them with our bodies The infusion of new music is one of the things I miss from my weekly Thursday morning pole dance class. Each week my body discovered something new in my teacher’s playlist or my classmates dances. Or was reminded of a forgotten favorite. In an effort to meet our insatiable quest for new music, today is the start of a new Monday Music series: Songs for the Siren I’ve asked some of my favorite teachers, performers, studio owners, musicians and fellow sirens/mermaids to share their favorite music with us. If you have questions about music, finding your soul songs or suggestions for who and what to feature please contact me.
