Where will be during the blood moon on Sunday? Luna will appear red during the eclipse, while she’s behind the Earth’s shadow. Why blood red?
“You’re basically seeing all of the sunrises and sunsets across the world, all at once, being reflected off the surface of the moon,” said Dr. Sarah Noble, a program scientist at NASA. (Source: NYT)
Cool, huh? It’s a supermoon too. Since the moon is closer than normal we’ll feel its gravitational pull more strongly. And it will appear bigger (14%) and brighter (30%). Perhaps you’ve noticed that the last few nights.
The last time I watched a full lunar eclipse was as a kid. We watched it on our front lawn as a family. Last fall’s blood moon happened in the wee hours of the morning, so I chose to sleep instead.
This year, we lucky Californians, get to view the total eclipse as the moon rises in the eastern sky just after sunset.
I considered going to one of the local astronomy events (click thru to view a slide show of incredible full moon images around the world), pilgrimaging to the Marin headlands for the classic view of the full moon over the Golden Gate bridge or walking across the Golden Gate bridge with the moon over the city.
But how can I resist the chance to dance on the beach at sunset while a blood moon rises!?!
You know I can’t.
Wanna join me?
Dance with the Blood Moon
Join in the fun on Ocean Beach near the sand dunes from 6:30 – 8:30 pm (or until we get too cold, once the sun goes down). More details here (for this outing and future beach bliss dancing).
For those of you in other parts of the country or world, here’s a fantastic infographic that will show you if, where and when prime viewing is for this full supermoon total lunar eclipse.
Let’s make it a virtual playdate!
Where ever you are, dance with me and the blood moon to this Goddess Blood Moon playlist.
Artemis and Nemetona helped create it.
When I asked my oracle deck which goddess wanted to come and be priestess for the evening, Artemis literally leapt out of the deck with excitement, as if to say “ME, ME, MEEEEE!” I smiled and laughed with her at her exuberance. She’s my magic of nature mentor. She reminds us that we are nature and part of the magic. She inspires us to spread love and light as part of our sacred mission from our joy-filled hearts.
What is your heart’s desire? What will fill it up with joy? What’s stopping you from meeting this need, which enables you to give from an over-flowing cup?
Nemetona, our musical muse for the evening, nudges us to visit sacred spaces to connect with the divine.
When you connect with sacred symbols, you help your inner sanctity find a home in the outer world. You also tap into the ancient wisdom and spiritual grace of the old ways. Explore spirituality through sacred symbols and sites, and allow your soul to joyfully meander…
Go to one of your power places.
Sit on the ground, on a towel or blanket. Squirm your butt into the sand (or grass).
Breathe in the beauty, peace and energy of your surroundings. Exhale while closing your eyes for a moment to find the same within.
Touch (physically or symbolically) your talisman, like Artemis’s bow and arrow, to empower your dance, divine mission, and heart’s desire leap of love. Add your own intention too.
Cue up the spotify playlist (that you’ve already made available offline).
Let the music take you on a journey out of your head and into our body. Begin to sway or circle when the music or your surroundings tempt you. Respond to emotion or longing in your chest, shoulder or fingers to stretch or swirl. Follow the movement where it leads. Luxuriate in the sensations.
Connect with your inner goddess and wisdom. Trust your body to move how she wants. As children, we moved and danced spontaneously in ways that ignited our souls.
Let your senses come alive as you witness and feel the magic of nature all around (and within).
Notice the way the breeze caresses your cheek (or the wind blows through your hair). Tickle your toes in the earth. Prance with the sky. Ripple your spine like feather reed grass. Sway your hips like seaweed in the ocean current, then circle them under the moon orbiting us. Soar with the seagulls and nighthawks and skip through the waves (ocean or field of amber grain).
Let your heart fill with joy, love and magic. Say yes with your body and soul. Dance and play on the beach or in the jungle. Leap with love and light.
