Two actions altered the course of my adult life.
First: I baked peanut butter blossoms in November 1986.
They’re the cookies with the Hersey’s kisses on top. This was the key that got me my first kiss from the man I married. We’ve been kissing for 27 years and I’ve learned incredible love lessons being married for more than half my life (Note to self: finish parts 3-6 in this series soon!)
Second: I watched Sheila Kelley on Oprah exactly 17 years later.
Something about Sheila’s child-like, wide-eyed enthusiasm the first time she demonstrated hip circles, hidden from the camera’s view, made me sense magic in them. In that moment, I knew a woman’s secret power must be tucked away like buried treasure in her hips.
Sheila became one of my teachers. First through her writing. Then in videos. Eventually live.
In the beginning, I loved the warm up and sensual dancing but I hated pole tricks. The first time I ever had fun with the pole was letting go with a simple swing walk in pole class with Sheila. Playing with Sheila live is a life-changing gift that builds sisterhood between all who attend.
Introducing Sheila Kelley Live!
Recently, when Sheila tweeted about her love for Lay Your Cards Out by Polica I invited her to participate in Songs for the Siren so we could chat about music and her newest event: Sheila Kelley Live! in Palm Desert.
1) What songs are you listening to lately? How are they inspiring you?
Music she soothes the savage beast and sometimes makes her ever more savagely sexy! Like a Criminal by District 78 is my “lover song” of the moment. I’m feeling flushed just thinking about it. And then there’s the Bon Iver and James Blake collaboration, Fall Creek Boys Choir. Oh my, go, run, get it, dance to it and you’ll see and feel what I’m talking about. So good. Also I’m loving my niece’s band Guards. Their music is haunting and charming all at the same time.
Listen to Sheila’s picks on spotify.
Sheila, I’m adding Fall Creek Boys Choir to my playlist for my 2nd annual 30 day spine circle challenge. Last night’s song was one you might enjoy: Ghost in this House by Alison Krauss & Union Station.
While chatting with Jennifer H about SK Live, she mentioned that my ears must’ve been burning the night before because in the Erotic Creature workshop you illustrated the archetype of ‘joyful playmate’ with me and my beach dancing bliss moment at the Coronado retreat. I got chills. The energetic synchronicity of our sisterhood still astounds me. I’d just completed my Goddess Blooming article for la Vie Sirene, which discusses that very moment!
2) What about my dancing in the sand exemplifies joyful playmate to you?
Oh! Lisa, the way you toss your head. The way you splash your hair. That look of mischief in your sexy eyes. The quick whip of your hips and shoulders when you get the attention you want. And then the way you make us chase after you for more!! All with joy, you play, play, play and steal our hearts. I miss you!
My husband loves that mischievous look, especially on Sunday mornings. I miss you too, Sheila! And all my retreat sisters. Hopefully some will come play with me on Will Rogers State Beach at sunrise before I conjure magic with words in Santa Monica writing myself into motion with Alexandra Franzen while you are helping women become who they are destined to be in Palm Desert!
3) What are the other archetypes in your forthcoming book?
Joyful Playmate, Deep Soulful Siren, Shy Reluctant Enigma, Champion, Ice Queen, Blissful Pleaser, Naughty Provocateur, Innocent Teaser, Dangerous Challenger, Lustful Lover are the ten original Erotic Creature icon concepts featured in my upcoming book and retreats.
Oh, I’d heard these had been updated in the new book.
Here’s a siren secret:
Follow the emotion in your favorite music for dancing. That will lead you to your icons. And your body’s bliss! [click to tweet]
4) Which three archetypes do you, or rather does Stormy (ie your Erotic Creature), identify with? My guess would be dangerous challenger, deep soulful siren and ice queen.
Good guess! All right on except Ice Queen. Believe it or not, Shy Reluctant Enigma is my third icon in my triad.
Sheila, I picked ice queen because of the aloof characteristic and the notion of more going on underneath. Shy Reluctant Enigma actually makes so much sense! Now I understand why I’ve only had a few glimpses of Stormy dancing.
5) What are you most excited about with the upcoming SK live event in Palm Desert on September 7 & 8? What would you say to a woman who is thinking about coming but still on the fence?
I would say that this experience, this vision quest, is going to change your life. It’s called Sheila Kelley Live! not only because I’ll be there guiding you every step of the way, but because I’ll be inspiring you in ways that will make you feel more alive as a woman. I’ve been studying the way women think, move and feel for 13 years and I have proven that S Factor encompasses the missing piece of our femininity. At Sheila Kelley Live! we’ll go deeper than we go in the studios. It will be a more intense experience in S movement and philosophy to give you back that missing piece of femme power and genius you desire and deserve. A whole woman, fully alive in her bliss, vivacious, voluptuous and vibrant. Come!
It will be magical I’m sure! I look forward to hearing all about the awakenings and transformations from those who attend.
